Abstract
An attempt is being made in Cyprus to introduce an objective approach to bridge management through the development and setting up of a computerised bridge inventory system. A schedule of condition inspections has been introduced which picks up overdue routine maintenance and provides data for an objective assessment of repairs required. Work is costed and an order of priority established to assist budget preparation and planning of future work in various time scales. It is anticipated that by centralising responsibility for the condition inspection procedures and bringing the bridge inventory system under the control of a newly formed headquarters-based maintenance management unit the non-availability of skilled technical staff at district level can be overcome. Implementation of the system developed is now proceeding.
