Abstract

The initial aim of the study of turnover is somehow to ‘label’ the population of molecules of a particular substance (an enzyme maybe) or group of substances (proteins in general perhaps) present at a particular instant in order to follow the survival of that same set of molecules as time proceeds. The degradation of the molecule or class of molecule usually follows exponential kinetics, and can conveniently be described in terms of a ‘half-life’ which is the time for half of the molecules originally present to be degraded (and in the steady state, replaced).
