Abstract
That part of nursing that has been traditionally known as ‘general/adult nursing’ represents a very broad span of activities. In a general medical ward, for example, it is possible to find cardiology, nephrology, neurology and numerous other medically determined specialties. In surgical wards there is a similar tendency towards specialization. In addition, the kind of acute hospital-based nursing we label as ‘general’ also includes high technology units and accident and emergency departments. The majority of nurses working in these areas hold general registration (RGN) or enrolment (EN(G)), now referred to as first and second level registration. Some may also hold an appropriate post-basic qualification; the work force includes nurses in training and health care assistants whose role is to assist nurses.
