Abstract

The nursing of sick children has been considered as separate and different from nursing adults throughout the profession’s history. The Nurses Registration Act (1919) set up five separate parts to the Register of Nurses, one of these parts being that containing the names of nurses trained in the nursing of sick children (Ministry of Health, 1919). The care of sick children will continue to require separate educational preparation in the future as recognized by the establishment of children’s nursing as one of the four specialist branches in Project 2000.
