Abstract
The development of supervision in nursing can be seen to be generated from a number of diverse influences both within and outside the profession—as related by other contributors to this volume. However, the protection of children from parental mistreatment is a concern that has a particular impact. It is a concern voiced in the media, the professions and government, stimulated by notable incidents of what Dingwall, Eekelaar and Murray (1983) term ‘agency failures’: that is, by the deaths of abused children which have been subject to special inquiry reports or apparently ‘over-zealous’ intervention as in the case of Cleveland (DHSS, 1988a).
... we believe that, however experienced the practitioners might be, child abuse work is sufficiently complex and demanding as to require, invariably, good supervision. (A Child in Mind, London Borough of Greenwich, 1987)
