Abstract
The interpretation of the term clinical supervision is generally defined within the context of professional education and training. However some authors argue that this is too restrictive an interpretation and it should be broadened to include the relationship which occurs between practitioners during the process of peer appraisal and review (Butterworth, 1988). This interpretation raises an interesting debate in health visiting which relates not only to the interpretation of professional practice (Robinson, 1987; Twinn, 1989) but also to the significant changes occurring in health visiting intervention (Goodwin, 1988). Indeed it is this type of debate which highlights the significance of the clinical supervision offered to students during their preparation for practice. The following discussion about clinical supervision in health visiting will be considered in that context.
