Abstract
Infant deaths and those related to childbirth have always been investigated with special care. In 1843 Chadwick expressed concern that infanticide was passing undetected, and even now the ‘stillbirth’ rate is twice as high in illegitimate pregnancies as it is in the married (OPCS, 1989).
