Abstract
Judaism, the religion of the Jewish people, preceded Christianity. ‘Jew’ is the name given, since the 6th century bc, to the members of the Tribe of Judah, themselves descendants of the Patriarch Abraham from about the year 2000bc. Jacob, a grandson of Abraham, was given the name of ‘Israel’ by God in recognition of his deeds (Genesis 35, 9–12) and his descendants are also known as the ‘Children of Israel’.
