Abstract
In any crop, improvements in the phenotype may be brought about either by changes in the environment (e. g. better applications of fertilizers; irrigation in dry seasons; disease and pest control) or by improvements in the genotype (i. e. new varieties). Many improvements in phenotype may depend upon genotype × environment interactions, a classical example of such an interaction being that between heavy applications of fertilizers and yield in cereals. Heavy applications of fertilizers will usually only give increased yields if the variety has a high resistance to lodging. Conversely the newer lodging-resistant varieties will only give higher yields than the older varieties at the highest levels of fertilizer application.
