Abstract
This section is based on research into the experience of hospital closure from the patients’ perspective. It focuses on the connections between theory, policy and their practical effects at the grassroots level. The study followed three groups of patients through the process of leaving hospital and settling into group homes in the community. It was approached from an anthropological perspective, which relies on participant observation methods and attempts to explore and understand the world view of the subjects of research. Hence, the main interest is in the life experiences of the former patients, how these are interpreted and how they are related to the structures surrounding them.
