Abstract
Muscle biopsy is essential for the diagnosis of many neuromuscular diseases and can also provide information for management, prognosis and, in suitable cases, genetic counselling. Occasionally, muscle biopsy is indicated for the diagnosis of central nervous system disease (e.g. mitochondrial encephalomyopathy) in the absence of clinical muscle involvement. In some cases of peripheral neuropathy caused by vasculitis, the vasculitic process can be demonstrated more readily in muscle biopsy specimens than in nerve.
