Abstract

Biopsy specimens taken for the investigation of metabolic bone disease and diagnosis of bone tumours are uncommon outside specialist centres. Tumours of bone and soft tissue should always be the subject of a tripartite discussion between the pathologist, clinician and radiologist before biopsy or excision. Few general hospitals will receive enough cases for the pathologists to develop diagnostic expertise, and there should be a low threshold for referral for specialist opinion.
