Abstract
The cellular slime molds are widely considered to be well-suited to the investigation of many fundamental problems in differentiation and morphogenesis. A faith in conservation of basic mechanisms throughout evolution encourages the hope that what is revealed about developmental processes in this lower eukaryote may be relevant for the understanding of related phenomena in other systems. Several recent reviews (Bonner, 1967, 1971; Gerisch, 1968; Newell, 1971; Garrod, 1974; Olive, 1974; Killick and Wright, 1974; Loomis, 1975; Jacobson and Lodish, 1975; Sussman and Brackenbury, 1976) have surveyed the considerable progress made to date in understanding the molecular and developmental biology of this organism. In this review, we shall emphasize the problem of cell adhesion in the cellular slime molds. We shall first review biological studies of cell aggregation and adhesion and then biophysical, biochemical, and immunological studies of the cell surface, which relate to the mechanism of cell adhesion.
