Abstract
Scabies is an infestation with a mite. It occurs world-wide and is especially common in underdeveloped countries of the world, and also in places where hygiene is less than perfect. Scabies is unusual in that there appear to be wide fluctuations in incidence. Epidemics seem to arise about every 15 years or so. In recent years the incidence of scabies has markedly increased. These facts are possibly due to a form of natural immunity to the mite which develops amongst communities. The recent higher reported incidence indicates that this immunity may be on the decline.
