Abstract
Diphtheria has been an almost unknown infection in western countries for several decades. With the advent of routine immunization of all children against this infection from the late 1940s, the incidence has fallen dramatically. From a figure of around 45 000 a year, with over 2000 deaths, in the late 1940s, the number of cases of diphtheria between the years 1986 and 1991 was 13, with no deaths.
