Abstract

The theory of Chapters 2 and 3 deals with those aspects of magnet design which are amenable to analysis. The results are, nevertheless, more qualitative than quantitative, and can only indicate the directions in which the best design is to be found, as opposed to being a complete set of design formulae. Much depends also on the form of construction to be adopted, which is greatly influenced by individual preferences and by the engineering resources available. In what follows, some of the constructions so far adopted will be described and an indication of their limitations given.
