Abstract

As outlined in Chapter 1, to generate powerful steady magnetic fields one has the choice between dissipating large amounts of power in windings of normal conductors, or using quantities of expensive superconducting materials to form the windings. The requirements are such that it is interesting to determine the coil configuration which minimizes either the power or the quantity of superconductor needed, and a theoretical discussion of coil design is devoted largely to these points.
