Abstract

This portion of the discussion will deal with static thermal and magnetic behavior of one dimensionally interacting magnetic solids. Magnetic heat capacities and susceptibilities of such systems will be treated. In keeping with the spirit of the ASI as a school”, the material contained in this portion will be quite elementary, with the idea of introducing the reader to the concept of how non-interacting three dimensional systems behave, how this behavior differs from that expected for lower dimensional systems, and to the techniques used to calculate thermodynamic properties of lower dimensional systems. We will stress the manner in which thermodynamic behavior changes as 1-D and higher dimensional interactions become important. Classic calculations to illustrate this point will be considered in detail. The primary purpose of this discussion will therefore be to enable the reader to attack the literature in the field with understanding. This paper will not be a review of the static properties of lower dimensional systems. For this type of review see de Jong and Miederaa, 25 Ackerman, Cole, and Holt, 26 and Ginsberg. 27
