Abstract
Let us imagine that we could set ourselves outside space and time and that from this vantage point we could regard our universe holistically, consider it in its full extension in space and time, from the Big Bang to the final collapse — or through all eternity, according to our model. Let us assume that we would be able to look at the universe as if it were a sandbox, with each grain of sand representing a galaxy, and take in its overall characteristics. Would we be able to say whether this universe offered good possibilities for the origin of life? Would we be able to specify just what a universe had to look like in order for life to arise, and whether this particular universe matched those requirements?
