The Influence of External Mechanical Carotid Sinus Stimulation on Heart Rate Variability

  • Chapter
Cardiovascular System Dynamics

Abstract

Calculation of heart rate on a beat-to-beat basis shows that the time series of successive heart beats exhibits variability. By elementary mathematical methods, this time series can be split up in two parts: (a) the time average or constant part (called mean heart rate), (b) the time varying part (called sinus arrhythmia or heart rate variability).
