Use of Hemodynamic Analysis for the Interpretation of the Mode of Action of Vasoactive Drugs

  • Chapter

Abstract

The shape of arterial pressure and flow pulses depends on three main factors: 1. The time course of the cardiac ejection, 2. the properties of the arterial system including the peripheral resistance and 3. the location of the recording site in the system. the time course of the cardiac ejection is determined by the interaction between the contraction of the cardiac pump and the input impedance of the arterial system. The problem of this interaction has been discussed by our group (Kenner, 1979) and by other authors (Taylor, 1973; Milnor, 1975).
