Leukocyte 5′-Nucleotidase

  • Chapter
The Year in Hematology

Abstract

The 5′-mononucleotides are dephosphorylated by the enzyme, 5′-ribonucleotide phosphohydrolase (EC 3.1.3.5), commonly known as 5′-nucleotidase (5′N). This enzyme was first described by Reis (1937, 1939) in heart and skeletal muscle and its specificity established histochemically for 5′-nucleotides by Gomori (1949a,b). The activity has since been described in many tissues (Drummond and Yamamoto, 1971). This review of 5′N in mammalian leukocytes is divided into two parts. The first part deals with its properties. Studies on the enzyme from sources other than leukocytes are included since much of the early knowledge was derived from other tissues. The second part, which discusses leukocyte 5′N, will attempt to resolve conflicting reports on the presence or absence of the enzyme in particular types of white cells. In addition, the effects of hematologic disorders on 5′N are summarized.
