Nutritional Anemias Overview; Megaloblastic Anemias

  • Chapter
The Year in Hematology

Abstract

Nutritional anemia is defined as a condition in which the hemoglobin content of the blood is lower than normal as a result of deficiency of one or more essential nutrients, regardless of the cause of such deficiency (WHO Scientific Group on Nutritional Anemias, 1968). To delineate that a given anemia is due to deficiency of a nutrient, two criteria must be met: First, it must be demonstrated that lack of the nutrient will produce the anemia, and second, that providing the nutrient will correct the anemia (Herbert, 1970). By these two criteria, there are only three unequivocal true nutritional anemias: those due to lack of the mineral iron and those due to lack of the vitamins folate (folic acid) and vitamin B12.
