Abstract

Extreme density populations of platelets have been separated with differential centrifugation techniques, employing various suspending media. The heavy population is enriched with large platelets having an average volume greater than the lighter population. These large platelets have been termed megathrombocytes. The heavy fraction has been shown to be more metabolically active. This population is also more resistant to osmotic stress and lipid peroxidation.
