Abstract
The method of preparation of crystalline boron by the U.S. Borax & Chemical Corporation involves (1) preparation of Moissan boron of about 89% purity, (2) upgrading the Moissan boron to 95% B by heating with fluorides, and (3) heating the upgraded boron by radiation in a vacuum. The latter step is accomplished by cold-pressing the powder into rings, stacking the rings to form a hollow cylinder, and heating in excess of 2000°C by means of a resistance heater in the center void. After cooling, the unfused material at the outside of the cylinder is removed mechanically. The fused portion is crushed to the desired particle size, screened, leached with HCl to remove iron, and then washed and dried. The product contains about 99.0% B.
