Abstract
Haploids (2n = 24) of Solanum tuberosum L. (2n = 48) are unique material for cytogenetic and breeding studies of this species. They offer the advantages of (a) disomic rather than tetrasomic inheritance patterns, and (b) a new direct approach to gene transfer from the numerous wild and cultivated, tuber-bearing, 24-chromosome Solanum species. They also provide new opportunities for the investigation of many genetic, cytological and evolutionary problems in the tuberous Solanums (Hougas and Peloquin, 1958).
Supported in part by research grants from the National Science Foundation and the Rockefeller Foundation.
The epithet Solanum tuberosum is used in the sense of Dodds (1962).
