Experimental Spin-Lattice Relaxation Time Data

  • Chapter
Electron Spin Relaxation Phenomena in Solids

Abstract

In the foregoing chapters the theory of spin-lattice relaxation has been outlined and some experimental methods for determining the relaxation parameters have been discussed. Ten years have passed since the first pulse relaxation measurements and it is our purpose in this chapter and in Appendix 2 to collect together and comment upon some of the results which have been published in that time. The relaxation of the Cr3+ ion in Al2O3 (ruby) has been the subject of extensive investigation, and in §9.1 some of the more important facets of the results are discussed. Because of the number and thoroughness of the investigations, ruby is a very appropriate example to illustrate the behaviour of transition metal ions. The next section, §9.2, is concerned with a detailed comparison of experiment and theory for a representative selection of rare earth ions. In Appendix 2, other published results are given, with a few details of the experimental conditions and with such comment as is appropriate.
