Abstract

In these lectures we shall consider the conduction processes in the oxides of the transition metals. Rather than try to catalog the properties of this wide range of compounds which is the subject of several recent reviews, 1, 2 we will try to look at the physical processes that make these materials, which appear very similar in structure, to exhibit an extremely rich range of physical properties: metals with 10-5 Ω-cm resistivity, and insulators with 1015 Ω-cm resistivity, ferromagnets, antiferromagnets and diamagnets. I have selected a few materials which exemplify the different properties and will discuss them in the light of the theories that are currently Applied, and which have been discussed by Frank Herman, Hans Frederikse and others during this Summer Institute.
