Abstract
Only accidental bits of stuff like the earth, floating in momentary equilibrium between extremes of cold and heat, permit such a fragile unlikelihood as life. From the perspective of recoil we see ourselves striving endlessly and hopelessly against a universe that is out of scale with our modest proportions. Self-confirmation and recoil are practically life itself, our moment by moment barricade against the tremendous forces that will overcome us, today or tomorrow.
