Abstract
The purpose of this chapter is to illustrate with examples taken from the literature the usefulness of group theory in solving problems of molecular structure. In many cases the spectroscopic method of determining molecular structure is far from unequivocal. However, at the least, very important inferences can be drawn by means of this method. As always, it remains for the experimenter to substantiate his conclusions by using a more conclusive method—perhaps X-ray, electron, or neutron diffraction techniques. The importance of the spectroscopic method is readily apparent, however, where the situation is such that diffraction techniques are not possible.
