Nucleation and Growth Processes in the Dehydration of Salt Hydrate Crystals

  • Conference paper

Part of the book series: Materials Science Research ((MSR))

Abstract

The changes undergone by the crystals of a salt hydrate during dehydration are discussed. The growth and dispersion of nuclei of the new crystalline phase are examined. Experimental observations of the formation of patches of the dehydrated phase on the surface of dehydrating crystals are reviewed, and the growth and transport of these patches are discussed in terms of nucleation theory.
