Grain Boundary Grooving at a Solid-Solid Interface

Abstract

Grain boundary grooving at an internal solid-solid interface has been studied in the Ni-Al2O3 system. Data obtained from the kinetics of growth of A12O3 grain boundary grooves indicate that at high temperatures the process is controlled by diffusion of aluminum in the nickel phase. The Ni-A12O3 interfacial tension has been calculated from the kinetics constant using measured solubilities and published values of the diffusivities and it agrees well with the value obtained from equilibrium shape measurements. The relevance of these results to considerations of the thermal stability of dispersed systems are discussed.
