Abstract

From the birth of modern psychotherapy with the work of psychiatrists Joseph Breuer and Sigmund Freud 100 years ago, the great majority of people who have sought therapy have been women. Recently, however, ever-increasing numbers of men have been getting therapy of their own. They have gone to therapy perhaps begrudingly in many cases, under the duress of wives, friends, or court mandates, but they have nonetheless started turning up in mental health workers’ offices. And an increasing number are going because they want to and choose to do so.
