Abstract

The title of this chapter is a take-off on the title of Helena Lopata’s first book, Occupation: Housewife (1971), which was published— after a long struggle—when she was forty-six years old. Since that time she has published nine more books and has another in progress. In addition, she has published thirty-five chapters in edited books and forty articles in refereed journals. She has presented fifty papers at scientific meetings, many of them international (in Acapulco, Singapore, Windsor, New Delhi, Cardiff, Posnan, Toronto, Vichy, Jerusalem).
