A Theory of Impurity-Induced Infrared Lattice Absorption of Alkali Halide Crystals

  • Chapter

Abstract

A number of experimental and theoretical studies have been made on the physical properties of phonon impurity modes in solids, such as localized modes and resonant modes. (1) in recent years, a considerable amount of experimental data using the impurity-induced infrared absorption have been accumulated for various mixed alkali halide crystals. (2–3) in almost all theoretical works, only the change in mass accompanying the introduction of impurities into crystals has been taken into account. (1) Although the change in force constants has been taken into account in some cases, the results have been expressed in numerical terms rather than in analytical terms. (4–5) With such numerical results, it is not always easy to understand the general aspect of physical situation.
