Extremal Dimensions of Cyclotron Orbits in Tungsten

  • Conference paper

Abstract

Two size-effect techniques for determining extremal linear dimensions of cyclotron orbits in metals have recently been demonstrated. Khaikin1,2 has observed the cutting off of Azbel-Kaner cyclotron resonance series in thin tin samples due to collision of the carriers with the sample surfaces when the size of the resonant cyclotron orbit exceeded the sample thickness at low magnetic field values. Gant-makher2–6 has detected well-defined anomalies in the radio-frequency surface reactance of similar samples under the same conditions, i.e., when the orbits just “fit” in the sample. The latter type of experiment should find general application since the requirement ω c τ ≳ 1 is less stringent than that for well-defined, high-order cyclotron resonance subharmonics, i.e., ω c τ ≳ 10, ω c < ≳ 100.
