Abstract
Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) of fairly high potency is easily obtained from acetone-dried or fresh frozen human pituitary glands. The purification of the hormone, however, is not so easy and traces of luteinizing hormone (LH) and proteins such as albumin remain with the FSH through many systems of chromatography, electrophoresis and salt precipitation. Moreover, the stability of FSH appears to decrease as purification proceeds and therefore the true biological potency and chemical nature of the hormone are uncertain. The present work is concerned with attempts to prepare highly purified FSH and with details of its chemical properties and the effects of certain reagents on its biological activity.
