Abstract
A discrepancy exists between evidence of the functional importance of the testicular hormones in foetal or early post-natal life and the lack of analytical data of the pituitary-gonadal axis during these periods. We started to look at the LH-content of pituitaries (Karg, 1966) and at testicular androgens in the bovine foetus (Karg and Struck, 1966). The glands were obtained from slaughter house material and a few samples were taken from unborn calves by caesarian section. The ages of the foetuses were estimated by measuring the crown-rump length (Russe and Russe, 1963). The LH-content was determined by a modification (Karg, 1957) of the ovarian ascorbic acid depletion test according to Parlow (Parlow, 1961).
