Abstract

At the beginning of chapter 13, we moved out beyond the Moon, beyond the planets, and beyond the distant sphere of comets until we reached the realm of the stars. Now we resume our outward journey. Imagine traveling beyond the stars, the nebulae, remnants or ancient surpernovae, and the outskirts of our own galaxy to the void that lies beyond. Here is the realm of the galaxies, where the sky is marked not by the pinpoints of light we call stars but by giant islands in the sea of space, each a cauldron of billions of stars, each called a galaxy.
