Abstract
The mechanical properties of polymers, and all matter in general, can be treated from two distinct points of view, namely, the continuum point of view and the structural approach. Each approach has distinct advantages and, indeed, they are complementary. However, more often than not, the two are considered mutually exclusive in that little attempt is made to combine the best findings of each approach. In this article, we shall concern ourselves primarily with an elementary understanding of polymer structure and certain aspects of mechanical behavior. In order to avoid misunderstanding, a few general comments will be made and a simple introduction to linear viscoelasticity will be given.
