Part of the book series: Fundamental Phenomena in the Materials Sciences ((FPMS))

Abstract

This paper presents a discussion of the following topics: (1) classical development of the theory of heterogeneous nucleation on substrates [1,2]; (2) modifications of the classical theory at the two extremes of low and high substrate temperatures; (3) the effect of substrate imperfections upon nucleation; and (4) the interrelations between nucleation theory and the phenomenon of epitaxy.
