Abstract
During the last decade, electron microscopy was used to study the various catalytic material preparations as well as related colloidal preparations. Quantitative studies of the various factors that determine the size, shape, and uniformity of ultrafine particles in solution made possible a chemical formulation of the process of particle formation in solution and a reproducible procedure for catalyst preparations. A very important concept came out of this work ; namely, the particle-size distribution curve as determined by electron microscopy is not an error curve, but it does contain information about the processes of nucleation, growth, and aggregation of ultrafine particles.
