Abstract
The purpose of the present paper is to introduce the concept that with hyperphenylalanemia the retardation of mental development is an expression of the excessive levels of phenylalanine or its related metabolites rather than a manifestation of the specific disease entity which we call phenylketonuria. We shall present first three pieces of clinical evidence which support this concept and then report on a survey carried out to show the distribution of increased phenylalanine levels when ascertained by newborn screening.
