Abstract

We have asked a question of ourselves which may be related to Dr. John’s question about number of cells involved in various aspects of learning. We have, as I indicated earlier, inquired about the structure that might be involved in producing the learning facilitation that we see with analeptic drugs. There are two extreme possibilities . One possibility is that during the course of learning connections are formed between cells as a consequence of experience (synaptic changes are the kind that we have alluded to), and that the effect of the analeptic drug is to potentiate the development of changes at each and every site. Another possibility is that there are modulating structures in the nervous system whose activity can alter the functioning of aggregates elsewhere.
