The Molecular Structure of Membranes

  • Chapter

Abstract

The discovery by means of electron microscopy that membranes are the most common supra-molecular structures of cells has made it justifiable to ascribe important functions to this type of structure. That membranes are involved in other functions than those of a boundary delimiting the territory of a cell or a cell nucleus became obvious with the discovery of membranes as the dominating structural components of energy transducing structures like the outer segment of retinal photoreceptor cells (Sjöstrand, 1949, 1953a), followed by the demonstration of a similar structural organization of the chloroplast grana (Steinmann, 1952, Steinmann and Sjöstrand, 1955) and of the membrane components of mitochondria made independently and simultaneously by Palade (1952, 1953) and Sjöstrand (1953b, 1953c).
