Abstract
Although the synthesis of proteins is genetically controlled (Chapter 10) it has been known for some time that most proteins are synthesized in the cytoplasm and not in the nucleus. The generally accepted scheme of protein synthesis is that the actual site of synthesis is the ribosome, a cytoplasmic particle. Ribosomes synthesize proteins only when combined with messenger RNA, which is thought to be the primary product of the structural genes and to act as a template ensuring the correct sequence of amino acids in the protein being synthesized.
