Abstract

The first year that I truly contributed to physics was 1929. Quantum mechanics had been evolving quite well without my help. So I wondered: What could I do? Where could I concentrate my effort and perhaps produce something original? I realized how much I loved group theory. I had worked with Michael Polanyi on the symmetries of crystal, and these symmetries had suggested group theory.
