Abstract
Let me tell you a fable: Once, long ago, there lived a rich and powerful caliph. He ruled his domain for many years, justly and in peace. His subjects were prosperous, indolent, and happy. But one day Mongol tribes heard of this felicitous land and began plotting to overrun it. They raised an impressive warrior band, set out for the caliph’s land, and were soon knocking at its gates.
