Abstract
A simple model of a porous ferroelectric explains the change of the dielectric constant with density. This model agrees well with the experimental results. Certain barium titanate powders show a low spontaneous strain so that their structure at room temperature appears to be cubic rather than tetragonal. Compacts prepared from such a powder exhibit an increase in spontaneous strain with increasing density, and this is explained with a model that is based on Devonshire’s thermodynamic theory.
