Abstract
A comparison has been made between the modes of deformation of single crystals and polycrystals of some high-melting carbides and oxides. In particular, titanium carbide and aluminum oxide are considered. The contribution of grain boundaries to the low strength properties of the polycrystalline materials at high temperatures is discussed. Detailed examination of surface cracks, caused by the impact of a hard carbide sphere, has been made using both interference microscopy and dislocation etching techniques. Some observations have been made on the effect of temperature on brittle fracture.
